Abstract

The concept of identity, as studied in the phi- losophic, litetary,. psychological, psychoa- natytic and artistic fields, is discussed. The rnain theoretical contributions that have contribu- ted to its formation from the archaic beliefs of ancient Greece up to the modern interpreta- tions of psychology and psychopathology are first adrlressed. The argument developed sug. gests that identity is endowed with a possibly changing plastic nature that justlfies the in- troduction of the terrrl- sembíanza (tesetn- blance). Faidy appropriately, this term seems able to explain the emotional dynamism ne- cessaf,'r to permit psychologrcal equilibrium, in spite of the constant individually and so- cially irnposed transformations.
