The Lombard capital, since XVIIIth century included in the Grand Tour itineraries, was considered of remarkable interest as a visiting stop by the international élites for the whole XIXTh century, both for its ancient and modern buildings and both for its art works, first of all the Last supper by Leonardo da Vinci. Together with the town visit, impressive landscape impac tours took place through the territories of North-Western Lombardy, including the Maggiore and Como lakes. John Ruskin visited Milan and the Lombard region thirteen times. Tha paper likes to focus on the elements of continuity in the selection of visited places and of remarkable sites and to study the interest, emerged during the 1862 and 1869 travels, for the painted works by Bernardino Luini, one of the five artists, together with Tintoretto, Botticelli, Carpaccio and Turner considered at the top of the artistic production in the volumes of Modern Painters.
