In Germany the issue of the admissibility of Islamic symbols in public places has long been the subject of a particularly lively and passionate debate at both a political and parliamentary level, with schools, above all, being a delicate area for discussion. However, beyond the specific question of Islamic religious symbols, the general topic of Muslim integration and the gradual institutionalisation of Islam in Germany is a delicate process, closely linked to a number of issues arising from the ethno-cultural diversity of Islam, and the fact that these issues are not easily adjusted to the German rule of law.

Abstract

In Germany the issue of the admissibility of Islamic symbols in public places has long been the subject of a particularly lively and passionate debate at both a political and parliamentary level, with schools, above all, being a delicate area for discussion. However, beyond the specific question of Islamic religious symbols, the general topic of Muslim integration and the gradual institutionalisation of Islam in Germany is a delicate process, closely linked to a number of issues arising from the ethno-cultural diversity of Islam, and the fact that these issues are not easily adjusted to the German rule of law.
