Hannibal’s cross of the Alps at the end of September 281 BC was already in the antiquity the most important episode of the beginning of the second Punic war. This episode had great influence in the literary as well in the artistic production since the XVI century to the end of the XIX. The aim of this paper is to consider some of the pictures dealing with the image of Hannibal crossing the Alps and to discuss their possible relation with the literary sources.

Abstract

Hannibal’s cross of the Alps at the end of September 281 BC was already in the antiquity the most important episode of the beginning of the second Punic war.
