On September 13, 2022, the 22-year-old Iranian student Mahsa Amini was arrested by the morality police in Tehran. While at a police station, according to the Law Enforcement Command she had a heart attack, collapsed, and fell into a coma. Three days later, she died in a hospital. According to eyewitnesses, she was severely beaten and thus died because of a cerebral haemorrhage or stroke due to head injuries. Her death triggered a series of protests described by the media as the most widespread in decades and known for the slogan Zan, Zendegi, Azadi (Woman, Life, Freedom).
