The occurrence of 5 liverworts and 27 mosses was studied according to the water table and reaction gradients in the peatland of Natural Reserve “Lago di Biandronno”. The water table gradient estimated by microtopography has an unimodal distribution, showing a main terrestrialization process promoted by Phragmiti-Magnocaricetea vegetation types; the pH gradient exhibits a bimodal distribution and higher acidity values relate to plant communities dominated by Sphagnum spp. The only vegetation types physiognomically characterised by bryophytes are community with Riccia fluitans or Sphagnum spp. prevailing. Distributions according pH and water table gradient are examined for each species. The occurrence of microthermic bryophytes such as Scorpidium scorpioides and Calliergon giganteum is particularly interesting at low altitude.
