The role of the spontaneous vegetation in the abatement of greenhouse gas in Lombardy. The aims of the study are the evaluation of the actual vegetation in relation to its capability of carbon sequestration and its natural value, and the estimation of the improvement in carbon sequestration that spontaneous vegetation could recover if it is guided to the potential vegetation. A judgment of environmental quality was assigned to each class of land use in Lombardy by means of two aggregate indexes. The main part of the region (ca. 45%) is assigned to the vegetation of negligible environmental quality, because its contribution is much poor both in carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation. The potential vegetation could only contribute with a decrease in NEE value of about 17% as regards to estimated NEE value of the actual vegetation (-4.6 TgCO2 a-1). The carbon sequestration can be enhanced by practices of proper environment management and restorations of deprived ecosystems, also in biodiversity levels, mostly in the plain area where land uses of agriculture type are prevalent.
