Two factors that play a major role on the lasing to instability threshold ratio in ring fiber lasers were examined. One of these factors is the transverse profiles of pump and lasing fields due to their guided nature and the extension of the doped region within the fiber core. The other factor is the inhomogeneous broadening of the erbium gain induced by the fiber host.

Abstract
