The fundamentals of Structural Fire Engineering are presented and discussed in this paper, with reference to the fire performance and design approach concerning either combustible or incombustible structures, as there are some inconsistencies among the original concepts developed for incombustible structures and the current design approach. The evolution of the code provisions at the Italian and European level is critically presented, with specific reference to the progressive modification of some basic concepts, like the fire load, the required performance in terms of bearing capacity (R)/integrity (E)/insulation (I), and their relationship. The risk associated with the fire development in those buildings consisting of a single compartment or of several compartments, either isolated or contiguous to other buildings, is discussed, and the great danger exhibited by the buildings with several compartments and/or contiguous to other buildings is highlighted, with reference to combustible structures, which cannot rely on the passive protection offered by fire self-extinction.

Abstract
The fundamentals of Structural Fire Engineering are presented and discussed in this paper, with reference to the fire performance and design approach concerning either combustible or incombustible structures, as there are some inconsistencies among the original concepts developed for incombustible structures and the current design approach. The evolution of the code provisions at the Italian and European level is critically presented, with specific reference to the progressive modification of some basic concepts, like the fire load, the required performance in terms of bearing capacity (R)/integrity (E)/insulation (I), and their relationship. The risk associated with the fire development in those buildings consisting of a single compartment or of several compartments, either isolated or contiguous to other buildings, is discussed, and the great danger exhibited by the buildings with several compartments and/or contiguous to other buildings is highlighted, with reference to combustible structures, which cannot rely on the passive protection offered by fire self-extinction.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
