Un’inedita Immacolata Concezione per Angelica Kauffmann

The essay advances the identification of a previously unpublished canvas, dated 1788 and signed by Angelica Kaufmann, preserved at the Royal Castle of Racconigi, with the work dedicated by the artist to the Father General of the Theatins Gaetano Giusiana, and mentioned in the manuscript Memoria delle piture, published by Charles Knight in 1998. The commission for the painting is reconstructed as part of the Piedmont-born Father’s network of relationships and cultural interests in Rome, including his friendship with Guglielmo Della Valle. The painting became a model for other sacred works produced by the artist in the last decades of her career.

Il contributo propone l’identificazione di un’inedita tela datata al 1788 e firmata da Angelica Kauffman, conservata presso il Real Castello di Racconigi (CN), con l’opera realizzata dalla pittrice per il padre generale dei teatini Gaetano Giusiana, menzionata nel manoscritto «Memoria delle Piture», edito a cura di Charles Knight nel 1998. La commissione è contestualizzata nella rete di relazioni e interessi culturali riferibili al prelato di origini piemontesi in Roma, con particolar attenzione al rapporto con Guglielmo Della Valle. L’opera costituì un prototipo per altri dipinti di soggetto sacro realizzati dalla pittrice negli ultimi decenni della sua attività.
