This article aims to consider the relationship of foundation myths to Modernity within the European context. More specifically, the analysis will focus on the figure of the hero, its genesis, development and conception in the Italian Risorgimento, with special reference to the Italian general, Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882), whose conception of a “United States of Europe” represented both a mythopic narration and the search of European man for a symbolical-political identity.
