Within the growing production of period dramas dedicated to the Cold War, this article focuses on a small group of titles: Deutschland 83 (Sundance Tv-RTL, 2015) and Deutschland 86 (Amazon Prime Video, 2018), 1983 (Netflix, 2018), and For All Mankind (Apple TV+, 2019). These TV series feature two constant elements: the “what if” formula, and a structural simplification of the complex, plural, socio-political activity of the Cold War into the exemplary action of an individual. The essay tries to reflect on how to represent today what happened in that fundamental historical phase and, in particular, the reasons for doing so. These TV series seem to respond in different ways to the following two questions: in what sense can the narration of the Cold War make us better understand our present history? And, what would have happened if the Cold War had had a different resolution (that is, a different narrative ending)?
For All Mankind (Apple TV+, 2019).

Abstract
And, what would have happened if the Cold War had had a different resolution (that is, a different narrative ending)?File | Dimensione | Formato | |
