The paper outlines the career of the sculptor Antonio Spazzi (Pellio Superiore, 1770-Verona, 1848) between the last decade of the XVIIIth century and the first quarter of the XIXth century. The artist belonged to an ancient dynasty which developed different branches along the Intelvi Valley in Verna, Ramponio, Scaria, Pellio, apart from Lanzo, where the members of the family most well known by scholarly studies were born, and also in Tessin (Arogno and Valle di Muggio). Anto- nio’s activity moved from Brescia to Verona, where he earned a nota- ble prestige and obtained important public commissions especially for monuments commemorating eminent Veronese personalities. Among them, the most remarkable ones are those erected in the Dominican church of Sant’Anastasia; but he also gained prestigious commissions in Mantova, where he worked in Palazzo Te and in the Teatro Sociale. Antonio’s conspicous success promoted the definitive placement in the Alle origini di una fortuna dinastica secolare Laura Facchin city of Verona and in Venetian territory of other two generations of art- ists of the Spazzi family: Antonio’s sons Grazioso (Verona, 1816-1892) and Giovanni (Verona, 1824-1866) and his nephews Carlo (Verona, 1854-1936) and Attilio (Verona, 1854-1915).
Il contributo ricostruisce la carriera dello scultore Antonio Spazzi (Pel- lio Superiore, 1770-Verona, 1848) tra gli ultimi anni del Settecento e il primo trentennio dell’Ottocento. L’artista appartenne ad un casato che nei secoli aveva sviluppato ramificazioni a Verna, Ramponio, Scaria, Pellio, Arogno e Valle di Muggio, oltre che a Lanzo, da cui certamente proviene il nucleo di maestri oggi più noto agli studi. La sua attività dal territorio bresciano si spostò in Verona, ove raggiunse un considerevole prestigio con importanti commissioni pubbliche, in particolare monu- menti commemorativi di illustri personalità cittadine, tra cui spiccano quelli collocati nella celebre chiesa domenicana di Sant’Anastasia, ma non mancarono prestigiose commissioni anche in Mantova, ove operò sia in Palazzo Tè che per il Teatro Sociale. Il successo incontrato da Antonio favorì il definitivo accreditamento nella città scaligera di altre due generazioni di artisti della famiglia, ovvero quella dei figli, Grazio- so (Verona, 1816-1892) e Giovanni (Verona, 1824-1866), e dei nipoti, Carlo (Verona, 1854-1936) e Attilio (Verona, 1854-1915).
