Th is paper sets out to provide an overview of European policies concerning validation of non-formal and informal learning, and to off er some refl ections with regards to European governance modes in the fi eld of educational and employment policies, and the consistency of policies for validating non-formal and informal learning with initiatives focused on occupational transitions. In view of an evaluation of the impact of the Council’s Recommendation of December 2012 on the validation of informal and non-formal learning (as well as its possible review expected for 2019), the paper off ers some preliminary elements for evaluating the relevance, the effi cacy, and the consistency of European action in this fi eld and speculates about the likely direction of future developments.
