The waste biodegradable activity was characterized by an aerobic biologic method based on the respirometric index calculated by 24 hours (RI24) determination. The experiments were performed on a laboratory scale reactor in controlled operating conditions, by recirculating the air through the biomass and continuously measuring the oxygen rate consumption. Based on the RI24 the anaerobic biogas potential (ABP) was estimated. The experimental results show a biological activity of winery wastes (grape marc) which makes it interesting for anaerobic digestion sustained also by its high moisture content. The medium values obtained by respirometry were approximately 1236 mgO2 kgVS-1 h-1 for RI and 1110 mgO2 kgVS-1 h-1 for RI24. This solution could be coupled with a subsequent aerobic treatment of the resulted digestate through bio-stabilization in order to produce compost.
