The optimization of waste collection, with source separation, is compulsory where a landfill based management must be overcome. In this paper a few aspects related to the implementation of this approach are critically analyzed referring to an Italian case-study. In the reference case the local administration is going to face with the optimization of waste collection through Web-GIS oriented technologies. Each step of this strategy will be comparatively discussed referring to a typical scenario of transient economy.
