Abstract

Nonlinear absorption imposes stationary waves in Kerr media to be conical. The interpretation of light filaments as stationary, continually refilled Hankel conical waves outclasses the soliton description, and is tested in experiments. Applications are foreseen. © 2003 Optical Society of America.
