A linguistic analysis of the inscription identifies in the same geographic and chronological context – Pyrgi, end of the 6th – beginning of the 5th century BC – the presence of two slight variants (Uni and Unei-) designating the same divinity. This is probably the result of two distinct written and linguistic traditions, in which Unei- appears as an “emphatic” version, destined to be eventually reabsorbed in Uni.

Abstract

A linguistic analysis of the inscription identifies in the same geographic and chronological context – Pyrgi, end of the 6th – beginning of the 5th century BC – the presence of two slight variants (Uni and Unei-) designating the same divinity. This is probably the result of two distinct written and linguistic traditions, in which Unei- appears as an “emphatic” version, destined to be eventually reabsorbed in Uni.
