The essay intends to contribute to demonstrate how the use of restorative justice practices can help to achieve the objective of preventing and combating hate crimes, which is expressly mentioned in the EU Strategy on Victims’ Rights (2020-2025). It shows how restorative justice appears functionally coherent to concur to both Offender Desistance and Victim Recovery and produces positive effects at the level of social cohesion, thus counterbalancing the fragmentation and disintegration of communities brought about by hate crimes themselves. However, in order to intervene in this area, restorative justice has to adapt its forms and carefully assess whether the individual case is suitable to be dealt with concretely. This makes necessary to train restorative justice facilitators and mediators specifically to approach hate crimes.
