In this essay we propose the results of research on the presence of sexist linguistic usages within the school manuals related to the teaching of Italian as L2, based on a representative sample of textbooks. In particular, a corpus has been created for a sample of 50 Italian L2 textbooks, selected with a publication date after 2015, in order to evaluate the most recent language solutions. This corpus has been questioned about the syntactic placement of some words (“mother”, “father”, “lord”, “lady”) and areas of life (work, professions and home) selected on the basis of potentially sexist employment (Nitti, 2020).

Abstract

In this essay we propose the results of research on the presence of sexist linguistic usages within the school manuals related to the teaching of Italian as L2, based on a representative sample of textbooks. In particular, a corpus has been created for a sample of 50 Italian L2 textbooks, selected with a publication date after 2015, in order to evaluate the most recent language solutions. This corpus has been questioned about the syntactic placement of some words (“mother”, “father”, “lord”, “lady”) and areas of life (work, professions and home) selected on the basis of potentially sexist employment (Nitti, 2020).
